In 642 A.D. the Arabs led by <Amr lbn el- Aas> came to the region and dominated it. By that time (Barca) City became the most important city in the eastern part of Libya instead of Cyrene. These subsequent events through thousand years left their stmps clearly on the city. The harmonized variety of its construction units give us a clear evidence on what this historical city witnessed in the field of economic prosperity and social welfare especially during the first years of its foundation due to the monopolization of the precious plant of Silvium.
When walking around the ruins of Cyrene, you will pass numerous important archeological monuments in which the old citizens of this city performed their everyday life, such as the < Agora > which was subjected to some alterations according to the roman style, and the construction of baths and the theatre. In addition to the religious building like the temple of "Zius" which was erected in the old Doric style of the 6th century B. C, and was destructed in 113 A. D. On the other hand, Cyrene houses more than 1200 tombs famous for their funeral objects.

Appollonia
–
Marsa Soussa –
In the ancient times, it was called Apollonia. A name developed the Greek god Apollo. This city played an important role in the history of Cyrenaica, as it was the only sea port connecting the region with the outside world.
The foundation of Apollonia was well linked with the foundation of Cyrene in the 7th century B. C. We haven't many documents about the old history of Apollonia, but this city has surely participated in all the events which passed the region since the time of the immigrant's arrival in the 7th century B. C.
During the Byzantine period which followed the roman period, the name of the city changed into Soussa from which the Arab word Sussa came. Thanks to the prosperity of Apollonia during the 6th century, it became the capital of Pentapolis region < Cyrenaica > and a lot of its famous monuments such as the " palace of duke " and some of the churches dating to the same period. In general all the remains of this city prove its prosperity at that time. Regarding modern Sussa, it was founded in the last century as a colony of Muslim refugees from Crete.
It is situated in the eastern part of Jamahiriya, its plains are spacious and fertile. the secret of natural magic hides in its lakes : Budzira, Al Magreen and Ain Al Ziana in addition to the diving rivers and the limestone caves , all this give to visitors some thing special :

Following the foundation of Cyrene in the 7th century B. C, some of other cities appeared in the hinterland. Those cities were in need of sea outlets and their people were forced to choose a suitable place to make seaports linking them with the other world.
One of the selected sites in this concern was Ptolmais which obtained a special royal care, through carrying out a number of constructions and streets on a splendid style. This care encouraged the people of Bernice to move to this prosperous city during the 4th century B. C. In the early Christianity era , Ptolmais became the capital of the region and took the name of " Metropolis ". Unfortunately the earthquake of 365 A. D affected largely the constructions of the city, and caused the declination of the life there.
The most important visible monuments in this city is the cisterns which were supplied by water through channels extended about 30Km, and the palace of columns. In addition to a number of religious buildings such as a church which goes back to the early Christianity days.
