Welcome to the great Libyan Jamahiriya

Libya –location and area:

The great Jamahiriya is situated in the north of the African continent and penetrates it further south, bounded by other African countries : Tunisia and Algeria on the west, Niger and Chad on the south, Egypt and Sudan on the east.

On the north a coast of 2000 kilometers stretches along the Mediterranean sea with Jamahiriya is a country that covers an area of 1.750.000 square kilometers considered as the fourth largest African state.

The Jamahiriya is composed of fertile plains. extended deserts and a chain of majestic mountains.

Beautiful oasis and date trees are scattered in the midst of the spacious Sahara, showered by periodical rains in winter and spring with an average precipitation rate of 300 mm.

Mediterranean vegetation and culture prevail on the littoral, such as dates, olives, oranges, citrus and other kinds of fruit trees. Cereals are cultivated in large areas, whereas the animal resources consist of sheep, cattle and chicken.

All these resources are constantly developed and improved.

The climate varies from one region to the other : in the plains, it is a typical Mediterranean climate, generally moderate, mild in winter and warm in summer.

But in the desert regions, the climate is cold in winter and hot in summer.

According to the 1995 census, the population of the Jamahiriya is estimated at 5 million inhabitants, 75% of which live in the littoral, mainly in Tripoli and Benghazi, and other coastal towns.

A net of roads connects the Libyan cities with the neighboring countries : Tunisia and Algeria to the west, Egypt and Sudan to the east and Niger and Chad to the south through  the city of Sebha.

Most of the Libyans work in the agriculture field.

However, there has been a significant and increasing interest in the oil and industrial sectors among the working population.

At present times, the principal wealth oil and gas, but also iron and industrial products.

The official language of the state is Arabic, although Libyans speak other languages :

  • English

  • French

  • Italian

The great Jamahiriya holds vast areas of interest for tourism considering the potentials it offers: an excellent climate in almost all seasons, a bright shining sun, beautiful beaches of white sand, rich archeological sites, a land where Islamic, Phoenician, roman and Greek civilizations intermingle, and of course the magical Sahara.
